FACES

A Vision Of Self In Time

I always wanted to be a fashion designer when I was growing up and I would often draw the female fashion models on the cover of the sewing patterns that my Grandma gave me.

They were patterns from the 60’s and 70’s. I always admired their style and hair. During my 20’s I started to draw clothing items and then I would make my own clothes from my sewing machine. I always liked drawing faces and figures.

This year, I chose to do a series of 10 faces during a 12 month period. I used my heart to guide me and the environment to inspire me.
I chose 4-5 colours I liked that day and used the colours to create the shadows and texture on the face and background. I have no idea what it will look like, I just keep painting.

The first 4 paintings were inspired by time in San Diego, California. A couple of them looked like aliens. Why? Every day the community goes the ocean around 5pm to watch the sunset go down. There are so many people, it reminded me of aliens coming down to earth and all the humans standing on the shore, staring at them.

Each face represents myself in that moment in time. When I look at each one, I can pin point the experience, mood and emotion I was feeling then. It’s a reflection of myself in that exact moment. Each face is named according to the experience. So for example, Perseverance was named because I triumphed over a challenging time.

When I reflect back on this past year, it brings up a lot of memories, some happy, some not so happy. It reminds me that the experience you feel today, will eventually go away and if something is hard, it will eventually go away and get easier.

Another thing I see is that we are consistently growing and evolving.

If you look at each painting, it is saying something. Maybe it's an angel or spirit looking over us.
What does each face say to you?

Love, Kimberley Smith
